Cussing and What’s Wrong with It

In January of 2009, I went to Washington, D.C. for the March for Life. While visiting places around there and going to a convention, I heard more people cussing then I ever had. Now, I am used to cussing, which is something I’m not totally proud of. I don’t know why people cuss or curse. Quite frankly, what is wrong with it? Well, I want to address this issue because I believe it is something that needs to be addressed very badly.

Being a legalistic Christian myself, when I heard someone cuss a year ago, I immediately condemned them. I would either look down on them, or just respond and try to slam them for doing so. As of recently, I have realized that not only am I not helping the situation when I do that, but I usually make it worse.

Everybody has legalism that shows in different ways. Anybody who says they aren’t legalistic is being legalistic. I think that this shows especially in Christians because we try to hold up the law.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized the cussing, or cursing, is wrong. I figured it was just one of “those words” that my parents didn’t want me to say. Now my eyes have been opened, and I realize that cussing is against the Bible. It doesn’t say “thou shalt not cuss” in the Bible, but it does say something close.

Colossians 3:8 says, “But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”

This verse clearly states that slander and filthy language wrong.

Cursing is almost always used as slander – to slander something or someone. Why do you use these words? Is it to impress your friends? Is it to make your friends feel bad? To bring someone down?

These words are useless. They do not help a situation, nor do they bring peace. Why use cuss words when you can just say something else? They are usually used as adjectives anyways. Cuss words are not just unnecessary, but they are rude. They are against the Bible and most importantly, they offend God.

I suggest you read an article by Chuck Holton entitled, Taming the Tongue. It’s really a good read. You can find it somewhere in the Internet. :)

This is very true. As James says, our tongue is a very dangerous thing and it can hardly be tamed.

One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 4:29, which says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Cussing, most definitely, does not edify those who listen, nor does it help the person who says it. I hope that this article will help others to realize that speech is very important.

Also, perhaps it can help others understand that we don’t curse because there’s a rule about it, but because God has convicted us because of our relationship with Him.

    Good job, Josiah :)

Great post, Josiah. It’s definitely hard to tame our tongues, but as you pointed out, God commands us to rid ourselves of any evil words.

I don’t normally cuss…but in unexpected situations, something slips out of my lips…whether it be a cuss word or something else nevertheless, just as equally “evil.” :)

God bless! Keep up the good work!

I really enjoyed what you had to say about cussing. It is sad how much we tolerate people using the Lord’s name in vain. I once heard a story of a man who played a sport and every time he heard someone cuss he would ask, “Please don’t say that, he is my friend.” His friends respected him so much that they eventually stopped cussing when he was there. In our own lives we need to kill sin ruthlessly. But with others we are to lead them gently to repentance (Galatians 6:1).

Yeah, we have this game, SOCOM, where you can play online with people. We bought a headset, and man people cuss and cuss and cuss. Sometimes when we ask them to stop, they will, but other times…

On the legalism bit there is a big difference between the Independent Baptist and Southern Baptist groups of Christians. On one hand the Independent Baptist Churches try to make many rules and regulations which can be fine but when you go to extremes as to say guys cannot wear shorts or girls cannot wear pants because it is just unholy then I think there is a line to be drawn there. Something i’ve recently embarked upon is the fact that instead of trying to create activities and regulations we should be trying to win people to Christ and show people real life change. I believe if people really are born again Christians they will have their own convictions about what they should and shouldn’t do in their life along with what the Bible says.

I have been to many of the Independent Baptist Churches where they talk about Contemporary Christian music is of the devil and girls wearing pants and having a relationships is blatantly sinning and I just think they think to much on the rules and regulation aspects to keep people from doing things instead of pointing people to God and establishing their own convictions.
